Halitosis is an embarrassing and socially debilitating problem. It can cause social anxiety, isolation and depression. It can also indicate potential health issues. The sufferer may not be aware they have bad smelling breath. How many people have you told, or worse, have told YOU that your breath stinks? It’s not something you mention, even (or especially) to loved ones. However, I think we could all recall someone we have dealt with in the last day/week/month that has had foul smelling breath. We note it mentally, and being a part of polite society, we may physically retreat from their presence, or avoid them altogether. Imagine how this would feel…this situation can be reversed.

Other foods dense in protein can also affect the smell of expelled air such as dairy foods, meat & fish, eggs, many nuts & seeds and also many types of beans and lentils. Chocolate, butter, pickles, olives, tomato based sauces are also prone to exacerbate the problem.
Drinks containing alcohol (beer, wine, hard liquor) are among the most common reasons causing bad breath. Many people are concerned they may have bad breath after drinking coffee (coffee breath). They are correct. Coffee is a known offender! Keep in mind that all citrus juices (including tomato juice) and fizzy drinks are also commonly associated with causing bad breath. Acids are known to make bacteria reproduce much faster. Ideally, to avoid bad breath it would be best to try and avoid consuming these foods and drinks.
SUGAR and its role in contributing to cause bad breath
The bacteria that cause bad breath are super charged when combined with sugar. Lollies, chewing gum & mints that contain sugar do not help to eliminate bad breath. In fact, the sugar in most breath mints actually causes the bad breath bacteria to become super vigorous and create even more offensive volatile sulphur compounds (VSC).
